Is 8 out of 12 three-quarters?

I had someone ask me that today in a meeting. How do you answer that kind of thing? After I got over the shock that this was being asked, I explained it was two-thirds. Then I muted the phone and asked the person beside me, also on the meeting, "They DID just ask that, right?"
