Seen and Not Heard

Children should be seen and not heard. Silence is a woman's best garment. Aren't proverbs great? But I'm done with being quiet.

Totally Legal!

I finally got my new Permanent Resident Card... I'm totally legal till 2015!

The card arriving last night was perfect timing, as yesterday I found out that we're hiring people in India, which almost certainly means I should start looking for another job. I've got at least a few more months in this job, so can start looking for a good one. Anyone have pointers for writing a good resume... that might actually get me a "real" job?

So, any low level IT jobs open up, or admin/reporting/data manipulation lemme know about it... I'm gonna have a first draft of a resume pretty soon. :)

    Tips on a good resume...

    1) Make sure your contact information is current and easy to find on the page.

    2) Decide whether you want to organize your past work experience by relevance (which will probably require multiple versions) or chronologically. It doesn't hurt to tailor your resume a bit for each application, but a single chronological version is good for posting to searchable websites like Monster.com.

    3) Make sure to specify a few major accomplishments for each of your past jobs. Learned a new skill? Note it. Save the company a lot of money? Definitely note it.

    4) Don't worry about describing your personal life or other fluff. Some people think it makes them look like a more "well rounded person", but employers really don't care. It just needlessly lengthens the resume.

    5) Write a cover letter every single time you send a resume to someone, specifying how your experience will make you good at the specific job they've advertised.

I've done contract work for years, so I've gotten used to job searching every year or so.

How open are you to moving? I checked my company's postings, but there's nothing listed in Arizona. All kinds of administrative positions company-wide, though.

Not really interested in moving... Though asking that question when it's 108 outside is pretty sneaky. :) My boyfriend just got a good job with the University here, so looks like we're stuck for a while.

Since I have several months at least before I'll be kicked out of this job, I'm not even ready to consider anything other than a good local job. I have a friend who gave me heads up on a county IT job which I'm planning to apply for as soon as they post it (should be tomorrow). I also know a guy (one of the black belts in my karate class), who works in IT for the court system. He's keeping an eye open for any opportunities that may come up there. I'm hoping that with inside people, I can actually get a nice job.

A month after this job goes to India and I still haven't found anything, I might be ready to reconsider. :)

Well, I can recommend that you post a resume to the following website if you haven't already. I tend to get calls pretty fast when I put mine on there.
